Hands On Felting Tool

When I first started creating dolls in 2019, I had the hardest time making hands that didn’t look like deformed props for a horror movie. My wrapping skills were not up to par, and trying to felt around wires everywhere left me with a lumpy mess, plus, no two hands ever looked alike.

I wanted hands that could help show my doll’s personality, but instead, I’d hide them somehow, so it would be harder to see what they really looked like. I’m also The Queen of Bent and Broken Needles, (hard to confess but keeping it real.) So I needed to figure out a way to make hands that I could felt easily with less wire, be identical, and moveable down to each finger joint.  

Through trial and error, I designed a template that helped me create my doll’s hands the way I wanted, and thought it could be a useful tool for anyone else who dreads and battles the dastardly digits.

There is no ‘one size fits all’ for doll’s hands, so I developed a range of templates to help you make the tiniest fairy hands all the way up to a 2ft-tall Santa who needs to hand out gifts.

I discovered the art of needle felting in 2018 after retiring from a long career in nursing. Little did I know as I tried my hardest to make that first piece look somewhat like an owl, that my life would change so much. I quickly fell in love with creating dolls ‘of a certain age’ and felt it was important to try and show their inner spirit, and also what to me can be the beauty of aging, which I feel is often overlooked. During the hours it took to create each doll, I started thinking back about memories of my childhood spent in England.  I rediscovered the delight of my 8 yr old self and her vivid imagination, and so I began to write what I knew she would enjoy. Those memories, and the joy of writing stories magically happens with each new doll and have given me a wonderful sense of traveling full circle.

Meet The Artist
Carolyn St Clair

After discovering needle felting in 2018, a retired nurse fell in love with creating “dolls of a certain age,” capturing the inner light and dignity of growing older. In 2021, she founded Swete Woolies, named for her Granny’s middle name. Her three-dimensional figures are sculpted with wool fibers, dressed in hand-sewn garments, and paired with original stories for children and the young at heart. She sells her work across the U.S. and internationally. Carolyn loves living in Southern Oregon.

I really enjoy creating a  unique doll based on your ideas.  Currently, I do have a waiting list, but would love to hear from you. Please contact me below, and  I will get back to you as soon as possible. I do request a 50% deposit just before starting your project.

Her personality is endearing, and she evokes such calm and peaceful emotions I could stare at her for hours! Swetewoolies creations are more than display dolls. I wish I could explain how Eloise makes me smile every time I look at her. Beautifully crafted, incredible details…. A beatific face--- meet Eloise. Carolyn created a piece of art that has a personality beyond anything I could have thought of. From her hand beaded turban and matching wet felted hand beaded scarf to the “sparkly” earrings and brooch… ( I love sparkles and colors) the purple velvet coat is royal beyond royal, fully lined AND she has pockets… a lady needs pockets. She has charming boots and a silk dress…. All of the requisite undergarments AND socks… there are details too many to list. Eloise’s face is tilted to the sun, her eyes are closed and she is enjoying the sun and the gentle breeze that’s coming off the ocean… Carolyn takes the time to get to know her clients… what’s important to them.

Thank you so much for making Alan for me.  He's a constant delight but naughty as only a spoiled boy can be.  He tends to like pilfering and does so every time he has a chance.  We're constantly returning property to his victims.  All this said he's loving as can be.  He's also beautiful as these photos will attribute.  His feathers have just glorious color and they're soft as silk.  His eyes are glorious as a bright blue sky.  He's much loved!

My late husband always called me “The Queen Bee”. Carolyn and I collaborated on what I was envisioning, and I gathered up a few little rhinestone “blingy” pieces that I hoped she could collaborate into my Woolie. She did a marvelous job of including those pieces, gave her green eyes like mine, and quite a little attitude, which is also right on point. She even has a little stinger! Every time I look at her I smile—she just tickles me to pieces, and is such a visual reminder of my favorite nickname and my husband. Carolyn’s work is stunning, so detailed, so whimsical, and I don’t know how she manages to felt a lovely little soul into each of her pieces, but she does. I feel so lucky to have one of her creations
